Stop argung about weather the US presence is causing the problems in aor solving them. Instead, ask the Iraqi people what they would like. Iraqi's are not children and should be respected enough to let them decide there own best interests. The US and UK are morrally in debt to Iraqis. The US military invaded to it now has the morral responsibility to do what is best for Iraqis based on there views; not our views based on westernd media comment and 'analysis'. [See Full Idea]

It's difficult to pin people down on what "winning" in Iraq means. There is a civil war there now and we cannot (& shouldn't try to) end it. We don't understand the depth of the rifts among Sunnis, Shiites, Kurds, etc. -- the deep-seated fundamental differences. We can't bring "democracy" to Iraq; our own democracy evolved over 200+ years and it's impossible to impose it on so different a culture. Leaving Iraq is not "surrender". It is common sense -- America is hurting; Iraqis want us out. [See Full Idea]

The last 7 years have shown that we can not defeat terrorism through force. We must tackle the root causes of terrorism, which include poverty, war, oppression, lack of economic opportunities, lack of education, etc. Obama should empower the State Department and USAID, expand the Peace Corps, academic exchanges, and rebuild relationships with our allies. The US should work mulit-laterally through the UN and regional organizations to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict & stabilize Iraq. [See Full Idea]

This is the man who, with the help of the people and leaders of Pakistani's mountain tribes, builds schools and makes sure to include females as well as centers for the women of the village. Although this area of the world seems to be quite unsafe right now and the Taliban have come back to power, I still think the best idea is education and outreach. U.S. citizens would support this if it were organized, publicized, executed. Right now, I think only Mortensen does this. [See Full Idea]

I believe that part of the reason lies in the fact that many Muslims around the world are afraid to speak out for fear of being targeted by these groups. Reduce world poverty. Crack pot hate mongers like Bin Laden have existed throughout history. What is remarkable is that others follow them. When people find themselves in desparate situations, they turn to extremists. If the United States is serious about combating terrorism, it needs to improve the economic position of impoverished people around the world. Just as the Marshall Plan slowed/stopped the spread of communisim in western Europe, this plan would slow/stop the spread of terrorism. [See Full Idea]

Overhaul the current food aid system so that it strives to benefit farmers in the food deficient low income countries instead of the US's agricultural and shipping businesses. In-kind food transfers should only be used in emergency situations in a timely fashion. Otherwise, cash transfers and purchasing food locally are more efficient and provide a needed boost to the economy. Also, a greater investment in long-term agricultural programs is needed to ensure food security. [See Full Idea]

The United States is one of five permanent members of the Security Council, yet they are providing a total of 14 troops, 16 military observers, and 259 police as of May 31, 2008. There needs to be more involvement of the US besides the monetary assistance that we provide, at all levels of U.N. peacekeeping. Voting is one thing, coming through with the cash is the most important part. As it is now, we are setting these important UN missions up for failure. Peace Keeping requires an Army & a Navy. I will triple the size of the Army Corps of Engineers and the Navy Sea-bees. I would use them to reach out to nations around the world AFTER a natural diaster. I would help them rebuild vital infrastructure. I would train them by rebuilding America's infrastructure. I would purchase heavy equipment (bull-dozers etc) Roads, bridges, dikes, levees, rail-lines would be what we built...no more destruction...focus on building and rebuilding. I feel that it is important to get our young people involved in peace time activities. The sooner the better. This can be done as soon as they graduate from high school and must serve one year. Our youth is being wasted and in this way they can learn to be useful and responsible. Whether it be peace time draft, or an internship into government work, so be it. This will get them off the streets and out of trouble. It will teach them responsibility and help them to grow and help their self-estee [See Full Idea]

Your first act should be to eliminate and forbid torture under any cercumstances. Then close the prison camp at Guantanimo. Make sure that all prisoners are released or actually charged with a crime. Those charged should be tried by due process under the constitution. A full investigation should hold responsible anybody who authorized mistreatment of prisoners. Close down Guantanamo, Abu Graib, Bagram and all other camps where we are illegally holding men, women and children from the War on Terror. If we have evidence of crimes, then turn it over along with the detainees to the appropriate country where they have been held. Those at Guantanamo should be sent back tio their countries of origin or charged and tried in the U.S.A. If no such evidence exists, then return detainees to their families. [See Full Idea]

Link Amtrak to the National Park's Service, renew its rolling stock, upgrade its passenger service amenities, (restore its money-making mail-carrying function). Promote Amtrak both at home and abroad as leisure class vacation travel. Invest in R&D (GWB gave &12 B to the airlines after 9/11 - which went to the CEOs of that already-imperiled industry) - for high-speed maglev rail. This isn't new --but I want to emphasize the scope I am talking about here -- like FDR's great depression conservation corps and highway and other building project for parks, highways, dams -- there needs to be a 700 billion dollar infusion into the Green Economy to fund new jobs in the green economy, as well as fund the building of light and heavy rail, etc. etc. The green job program must include technical training and management training which will assist these folks with permanent jobs. Union Pacific Railroad (UP) was deeded vast land holdings on both sides of the track across the Midwest when it was first built. With the trucking industry fading due to high diesel prices, we should bring back electric trains for long-haul transportation. Give incentive to UP to convert a portion of their land to wind farms to power the trains. This idea could be extended to electric cars too. UP could become the ExxonMobil of Green! [See Full Idea]

Tax the excess profits reported year after year by Exxon and other CO2 producing energy companies and use that revenue to fund the search for alternative energy sources and means of using energy for the benefit of ALL mankind, not just the stockholders of private corporations. America should JOIN the world community seeking ways to respond constructively to the environmental crises CO2 producing energy use has brought on. Rewarding profiteers is NOT the way to go.
